According to nephew Richard K.:
"[Bud's] great-great uncle was David C. McCandles. McCandles was shot and killed by James Butler Hickok at Rock Creek Station near Fairbury, Nebraska. Actually a nice place to visit for a couple hours, as is the homestead Monument near Beatrice....McCandles descendants include Bruce McCandless II, former astronaut."
