Born in Ohio, Edward left home at 18 and worked as a laborer until his marriage to Sarah Chaney in 1851. He remained there for two years, and in 1853 he took up a farm in Marion County, Iowa. his first home was a log cabin, and he farmed and raised livestock. He and Sarah had four children, then she died in the early 1860s. He remarried in 1864 to Martha Rich. They had eight more children.
